1. What's the secret to getting eyeglasses that look great on me?

Mebomitis is the inflammation caused by plugging of meibomian gland ducts in the eyelids

You may have itching, burning sensation in the eyes, sticky and dry eyes, foreign body sensation, eye lash fall, discomfort in the eye and increased frequency of blinking.

It is treated by one or a combination of the following depending on the severity of your case:

  • Warm compressions- soak a clean cloth in warm water and compress your eyes with for 5-10 minutes at least twice a day

  • Lid scrubbing- make a solution with baby shampoo in a bowl of warm water and dip some cotton balls in it, scrub your lid margins for 15 seconds each and rinse with cold water.

  • lid massage

  • Topical antibiotics as prescribed by your doctor

  • Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is used to destroy abnormal blood vessels in the eyelids to reduce inflammation and thus reduce the mebomitis. It also provides warmth to the eyelid and thus has a dual action. This is an outpatient procedure and usually takes 10-20 mins per session. You may require upto 4 sessions of IPL.

  • The Lipiflow thermal pulsation system is another recent technique that is used to treat mebomian gland disease. A machine is used to provide localized warmth while it provides simultaneous lid massage.
